o roam this neighborhood at night and she always told kevin to ride home with friends, teachers or on friday with school coaches. >> it was his brother's coach and maybe he felt like his brother wasn't there that night. and maybe he felt like he wasn't wanted or something. i don't know. i can't imagine. >> reporter: kevin's younger brother also fears the neighborhood. >> yes. there's a lot of strange people on haight street. >> reporter: you know, it's amazing how much things have changed in the last 30 years. people have come up to us probably 20 or 30 saying what's going on? what's this about? and we say this may be connected to the kevin collins case? they say who is kevin collins? it happened a long time ago. but michael sharpe lived next door to the residence there and says he remembers the two men that lived there and the fact that they were questioned. >> two men, two boys that were together, he had a motorcycle business here. and the other one worked in a

restaurant. so i used to associate with those two. >> reporter: you know their names? >> kelly and ken. >> kelly and ken. >> reporter: their last names? >> i don't remember the last names. we never went by last names. >> how many years ago did they move? >> several years. >> several years ago, yeah. [ inaudible ] >> i don't know if they did. i don't know. but i'm just saying that they were investigated by the police since kevin was taken. they had the dog, a black dog, and they were taken to the -- to the question and they were let go. >> reporter: mr. sharpe says he knew the collins family very well. he knew kevin, he knew kevin's brothers. again, this happened way back in 1984 when kevin didn't come home. well, the police knew something as early as last friday because neighbors here tell me that they started putting up no parking signs in front of this home. they knew about it friday. what tipped them off?

why they have reopened this investigation? we don't know that yet. but we will find out. reporting from the haight, i'm ken bastida. back to you >> thank you. it's always a big spectacle super bowl media day. reporters from around the world asking questions going into one of the biggest sporting events in the world. the big story today involved accusations against ravens star ray lewis. cbs 5's sports director dennis o'donnell is in new orleans with the latest. >> reporter: the baltimore ravens have one of the best defenses in the nfl. that's part of the reason they are here am but they didn't think they would have to play defense today. the story comes from sports illustrated. and they say that star linebacker ray lewis who tore his triceps in october began using performance-enhancing drugs to speed up his recovery not the first too i am that "sports illustrated" has longed lewis' name to using performance-enhancing drugs and once again the future hall of famer denied any wrongdoing. >> ray has work incredibly

extremely hard to get back so i hate to see anything to diminish the work ethic he put in to get to where he is right now. my understanding is ray has passed every random, you know, substance test that he has taken, you know, throughout the course of his whole career. >> i have been in this business 17 years. and nobody has ever got up with me every morning and trained with me. every test i have ever took in the nfl is -- there's never been a question if i ever even thought about using anything. so to even entertain stupidity like that, tell them to go try to get his story on somebody else. >> reporter: and you heard john harbaugh was emphatic saying lewis hasn't used the stuff and unless the nfl finds differently lewis will play in super bowl xlvii. so that is the story right now. coming up, we'll lighten it up. it was media day and let me just tell you that vern glenn met a supermodel. that's as much as i can tell you right now. you will have to wait to find

out how far he got. >> wait until he comes down off cloud nine. all right, dennis. >> reporter: you got that right. at first glance you might think that, hey, this got to be san francisco, right? it's actually new orleans shrouded in fog this morning. the weather forecast for the big easy looks bad. here's chief meteorologist paul deanno. >> it is going to be soggy on bourbon street over the next 24 hours. foggy this morning, warm and humid. look at all these thunderstorms with about 30 different reports of hail damage in places like eastern oklahoma and also arkansas and east texas all of this heading toward the big easy and new orleans will be very wet tomorrow with thunderstorms likely and temperatures dropping to the low 60s by the afternoon. believe it or not, out of the three cities, san francisco, baltimore, new orleans, baltimore will be the warmest tomorrow at 68 despite the fact that we'll have full sunshine. mainly clear skies over the south bay now. we'll talk about a return to the 60s when we get there and how long we'll stay there, that's coming up in a few minutes. >> we'll check it out. thanks, paul. well, it's not just fun and football in new orleans.

a couple of santa clara police officers are there to work. cbs 5 reporter don knapp shows us the officers are learning about how new orleans handles security at the superdome. >> reporter: when it comes to violent crime, the city of santa clara is low on the national list but then santa clara has never had to worry much about out-of-control sports fans or at least won't until the new 49ers stadium is completed. with an eye to the future, santa clara has sent some of its cops to new orleans to learn about crowd control. >> new orleans has done this many times. those guys are sharp. that's why we're sending people there, to learn from them. >> reporter: two officers, a sergeant and lieutenant, will be paid to go to the super bowl training session as well as a former police chief who will pay his own way. they will be learning from the best, says mayor mitch landrieu. >> our police department has more experience than anyone in the nation in imagining large

crowds. >> reporter: back here in santa clara folks had no problem with sending police for on-the-job training at the biggest sporting event of the year. >> depending on the culture or, you know, the rivalry it can get rowdy and so i think definitely getting down there and seeing the culture what's going on inside the crowd we are able to keep families safe and create a culture that, you know, families want to come out to. >> reporter: some people might say come on, this is a boondoggle. they are going to watch the game. >> our police department is the best. our guys are the best. they are doing a job and will get the research and information to make our process go smoother. >> reporter: there you have it. it's all business and a heck of a great assignment. in santa clara, don knapp, cbs 5. the victims of a cruel super bowl scam are going to the big game after all. a hayward couple got this in the mail and it says, enjoy the game, go ravens. this after they found an ad on craigslist for four tickets. they wired the seller $5,900.

after the story aired, ticketmaster offered the couple four free tickets and breakfast with troy aikman. cbs 5 reporter mike sugerman is on the road to the dome. he will have a live report from amarillo, texas, coming up in a few minutes. also, still ahead, we go to john harbaugh's high school in palo alto and we are going to hear from his coach and cbs 5's michelle griego visits the cemetery in new orleans why it attracts much more than mourners. those stories and more all coming up tonight. oakland as police chief says his officers are doing all they can to stop the recent rash of violence. but they need the public's help, too. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington on their intensifying search for whoever shot an 8-year-old girl. >> everything is turned upside- down, looks like. i don't know what's going on. people aring go crazy. >> reporter: robert martinez has lived in his ease every east oakland house on 65th avenue for 42 years. he says just recently his neighborhood has started to feel like a war zone.

he hears gunshots every day, and innocent people like himself areking about the victims. this past friday, his home was sprayed with bullets. this happened in the morning in broad daylight. and yesterday, only a few houses down, an 8-year-old girl was shot just before 2:30 in the afternoon. police say this was a drive-by shooting outside a family member's home. she was hit in the leg and taken to the hospital. >> it's terrible. it is very terrible for having a little child shot like that over nothing. they don't care who they hurt. >> reporter: today nobody at the house would talk to us. there was a car in the driveway with a back window blown out. police are linking much of the latest gun violence to rival gangs. even officers have been targeted. one was shot in the leg friday while chasing a man at east 12th and fourth avenue. an undercover officer was also shot and injured on the 21st, sitting in a car on seminary avenue. the police chief addressed the shootings at a press conference today. >> i and my officers are

committed to the children in this community and our neighborhood. we will catch the shooter and we are coming after you. >> reporter: but martinez feels they're on their own. what would you like to see police do? >> well, ha ha -- >> reporter: are they doing enough? >> nothing. they are not doing anything. >> reporter: police have made no arrests in the shooting of that 8-year-old and that little girl was still recovering at the hospital. they did, however, arrest suspects involved with the shootings of the police officers. in oakland, elissa harrington, cbs 5. pittsburg police just named a suspect in the deadly shooting outside a gas station this morning. they say 22-year-old brian keith fox is armed and dangerous. the victim was shot in the head at a union 76 gas station on railroad avenue this morning. s.w.a.t. teams found fox's car on marin avenue by water street. but they are still looking for the suspect. bay area football players expelled. their coach fired. coming up, the response from the school on the high school hazing. >> why the discovery of this

crime spree in san jose. police arrested these 3-teenagers la new at 6:00 a breakthrough in the case involving a violent crime spree in san jose. police arrested these three teenagers last week in connection with the home

invasion robbery. now, investigators say they forced their way into the almaden valley home armed with a knife last monday then bound an elderly couple with duct tape and ransacked the house. police say they took electronics, credit cards, cash and two cars. the cars were recovered within 24 hours. police tracked down the suspects and connected them to three other armed robberies this month. a vallejo high school is defending its decision to fire a football coach who reported a series of hazing incidents. saint patrick-st. vincent says varsity coach chris cerbone reported the hazing to the school before christmas break. the school won't go into specifics about what happened in the locker room, but it does say the hazings happened between varsity and junior varsity players during unsupervised practices last fall. after the school investigated, it expelled five varsity players and fired the coach. >> doing your job and alerting, you know, your bosses as to what's going on is what you're supposed to do. but in the end, failure to

supervise the students created an atmosphere that allowed that to happen so we made the decision to terminate the coach. >> could the cases be made that the other assistant coaches also were not present and therefore why are they still there and he's gone? >> well, it's not a committee. the coach is in charge. >> i support what they did. mr. cerbone obviously didn't want this to happen. it's an unfortunate event that it happened. but he was in charge of the whole situation. >> the school also contacted vallejo police but investigators say no one involved has come forward to file a report. rescuers are trying to piece together a mystery tonight. how did a coyote end up in san francisco? this female coyote was found in a backyard in the mission district last week. she is now undergoing treatment for dehydration, emaciation and respiratory infection. she may have hitched a ride in the engine compartment of the car and found herself in the

city far from home. the road do the super bowl is full of adventures for 49ers fans taking the traditional american road trip. cbs 5 reporter mike sugerman is taking a road less traveled so to speak. his latest stop along the way to new orleans put him in the yellow rose of texas. the city of amarillo. mike. tell us about your adventures today. >> reporter: yeah. well, i am eating dinner at the moment where it's snowing outside. amarillo, texas, 72-ounce steak. i get it free if i finish. i'm up against 11 others. two other women who are butting me to shame. top sirloin only four of these on the cow. you have to eat a baked potato also, shrimp, salad, and a roll. it's been quite a week. my wife and i taking the road to the super bowl. let me show you what we did the last couple of days.

reporter: how about we go to london today? >> mike, last time i check the map, we were heading for arizona. >> reporter: there's a little bit of london in arizona. bear with me on this. in the middle of the arizona desert sits an oasis of a bridge. it's notable not for where it goes but where it's from. the london bridge. the london bridge no longer resides in london. it now lives in lake havasu city. >> the found ever of our city needed something to draw people to the middle of the desert. >> reporter: and the london bridge was falling down. the city of london had a bridge to sell. >> the initial reaction, how much did they have to drink? >> reporter: his move from fargo, north dakota, was easier. >> the bridge had to be dismantled block by block in london. and each one of the blocks was marked with a number code. >> reporter: thousands of pieces, three years of construction, total cost

now at 6:30, president obama hits the road pitching his plan for an immigration overhaul calling the current

system out of date, and badly broken, the president today laying out his framework for fix it. cbs 5 reporter len ramirez on how he plans to do that. len. >> reporter: a lot of work ahead, allen. it's going to be a very tough fight. a lot of bitter debate is yet ahead on this. but people who have been working with the immigrants said that today was the most positive news that they have heard in years if not decades. >> the plight of all people who are in a strange land. >> reporter: mixing prayer with politics a few dozen supporters of immigration reform gathered around a big screen at our lady of guadalupe catholic church to listen to president obama lay out his plan to overhaul the system. >> we have to deal with the 11 million individuals who are here illegally. >> reporter: and most importantly, for this community, the president kept the flames of hope alive for people to one day change their illegal status. >> we all agree that these men and women should have to earn

their way to citizenship. but for comprehensive immigration reform to work, it must be clear from the outset that there is a pathway to citizenship. >> the possibility that this is real for our community is just overwhelming. i think as emotional as we may be about it, it's nothing compared to people who have been waiting kind of with no end in sight. >> imagine what it's like to not hold someone that you although every? >> reporter: one who has been waiting is ruby ramirez. her mexican-born stepson has been separated from his u.s.- born brothers their whole lives. >> i want my boys to be able to meet their brother. and i think that this is going to happen. it's going to happen soon. and i'm really, really excited and proud. >> reporter: a path to citizenship is only part of the exclusion mr. obama said. his plan also includes stricter law enforcement and reforming the legal immigration system which the president called out of date and broken. latino activists say the

president is finally making good on campaign promises made in 2008 and 2012 to throw his full support behind comprehensive immigration reform. >> once the latinos mobilize that we can be a force to be reckoned with and i think the 71% of latino vote that put obama back in the white house is the tip of the iceberg of what you're going to see in this country. >> reporter: in order to earn immigration status in this country that's the way the president termed it today, earn it, undocumented immigrants are going to have to learn english, pass a background check, pay a fine and then get in line behind others trying to come into this country legally. but allen, the big news here is that a lot of these folks are going to get immediate status provisional but immediate status to live and work in this country and that is a big weight off their shoulders. a lot of them have been living on the fringes of society for years now maybe they feel a little more comfortable coming out and doing their jobs.

>> thank you, len ramirez. new tonight a federal judge has dismissed a constitutional challenge to san francisco's ban on public nudity. advocates had challenged the city's ordinance that banned nudity except for permitted events. the order says the courts have upheld other restrictions on public nudity. the court also ruled that public nudity alone is not protected by the first amendment. the parents of a walnut creek man killed by police last month are suing the police department. 22-year-old anthony banta died december 27. the officers who shot him say they shot in self-defense when banta charged them with a knife at his apartment. now banta's parents say he was not armed. they are seeking $15 million in damages. it was walnut creek's first

officer-involved shooting since 2001. an oakland woman is accused of disguising herself as a doctor to steal credit cards in bay area hospitals. 49-year-old yolanda smith was arrested at a fairfield hospital last week after allegedly running the scam for almost a month. authorities say she wore a white lab coat to trick her way into numerous hospitals to steal employee credit cards. well, as you would imagine, the louis armstrong international airport in new orleans is busy but they haven't seen the biggest rush yet. that's expected to come after the super bowl. up to 50,000 passengers expected to pass through the airport in the 24 hours after the game. the airport is nearly doubling its security lanes and keeping concessions and ticket counters open throughout the night. new orleans is one of the most unique cities in america and the big easy even buries its dead differently. michelle griego with your cbs 5 news headlines. shows us graveyards aren't just a place for grieving. ♪ [ music ]♪

for six. how he got these tickets? well, it started with this gold jacket and a "san francisco chronicle" article on him, that caught one particular 49ers' attention. >> i see didn't know jed york -- he had two tickets doing a contest on twitter. i said i have a twitter account but i have never been on it. >> reporter: after the article, dozens of fans crusaded for terry. mr. york's ears perked up and then he got this email. >> i wanted to give someone a chance to go to the game who embodied what it means to be a faithful fan. >> reporter: as for the good luck charm, terry says that's pressure. >> the pressure is on. i know. and i hope not too many people around me know who i am. >> reporter: one he is willing to take on keeping a positive attitude and he is hoping with a possible sixth win there could be a 7th bowl to complete his lucky collection. >> go 9ers!

americana to convince her she came to the right place to get an application for u.s. citizenship. >> everything is perfect. looks like a government website. >> reporter: at least at first glance. in order to access the form, u.s. immigration.com requires a payment of $189. the site also sells a large variety of other forms including passport applications for almost $60 and one for a green card for nearly $150. pretty steep considering almost all government forms are free, something lee didn't realize when she went searching online. >> we typed in u.s. immigration citizenship and this is the first listing that came up. >> we can't control what shows up on a search engine. >> reporter: u.s. citizen and immigration services says the listings that pop up before the official government sites are often advertisements. but the disclaim, may be hard to find. >> all we can do is help educate the public if you are

looking at a website to get immigration forms, if it doesn't end with.gov, then it's not us. >> reporter: and while many people know that, many new immigrants don't. this san francisco notary frequently sees people who have paid for free forms. >> last time i saw it when a couple came in they paid $149. >> reporter: a time-consuming lesson for catch win lee she hopes others can will earn from. >> they are free. >> reporter: she disputed the charge with her credit card company and has gotten word she will get a refun although it's not yet been issued and we should note while these forms are free the u.s. government does charge an application fee. and remember, if you have a consumer problem, call us or go to cbssf.com/consumerwatch. couple of days left in january and we're not bringing any rain in before the end of the month. >> what a difference late november early december, so much rainfall throughout the month of december. january it's like mother nature, you know, like she has

a switch, pushed the off button. we're going to end on the off button starting february with the off button when it comes to rainfall but not sunshine. you had lots of it today. hello, san jose! on this fine tuesday evening, we have 54 in concord. san jose you're the chilliest spot here, 51 degrees. at the u.s. mint, san francisco 52 degrees. santa rosa 56. oakland 56 degrees. you have seen this before. you have seen this a lot this month. cbs 5 hi-def doppler even the strongest radar in town can find nothing when it comes to rainfall. we are very dry. nights have also been chilly. we are not going to get down to freezing but we'll get close a chilly start napa, concord, a jog or bike ride in the morning in fremont 39. san jose 40. that's kind of just, you know, basically what we have had all month long. we have had 22 days in january with sunshine. that's well above average. you're a fan of sunshine, it's good stuff. but we have had 15 mornings with temperatures near or below freezing when it comes to inland locations.

so january 0 rainfall but a lot of sunshine and a lot of chilly mornings with temperatures near freezing. not much is going to change over the next couple of days. high pressure centered off to our west is closer to us tomorrow. today we had a north wind. that that kept us chilly even with sunshine. tomorrow as high pressure gets closer to us we get less of the north flow. it turns to a northeast flow. it will be several degree milder tomorrow, some of us in the mid-60s. once high pressure gets close it's going to stay close to us all the way through the weekend. we'll stay dry. the storm track, there are storms out there. there are portions of the west coast getting rainfall. it just is not here because of that protective bubble of high pressure not moving, weather is not changing. so sunshine through saturday through the weekend. high temperatures stay a few degrees above average and we'll be above freezing at night but if you live away from the water and many of you do it will be chilly with widespread 30s for the next several nights but highs tomorrow, low 60s oakland, 4 degrees above

average, 63. san jose 2 degrees above average at 63. look at that 64 for morgan hill. gilroy mid-60s. los altos 63. pacifica 60. 61 pittsburg and concord. san ramon, vallejo, napa 63. petaluma 61. daly city 58 degrees. extended forecast, mid-60s right on through the weekend even when we get cloudier on sunday. no rainfall, it will stay mild. next week i see a pattern change. cloudier by tuesday, showers likely by next wednesday. but the next 7 days mainly dry. we're talking about the super bowl, sports is coming up next. here's a little more from our local fans. >> what are you going to do for super bowl sunday? >> go to some friends's house, watch the game, eat, drink, have a good time, root for the nooners. >> root for the 49ers and have some beverages, adult beverages, and food. >> snacks. >> watch the 9ers kick butt. >> watch the 9ers kick butt. that's it.
